SLEEP

The Forgotten Ingredient in the Hustle Recipe

You ever notice how bragging about being tired has become the new badge of honor? “I only slept four hours last night,” someone says proudly, as if sleep deprivation is proof of ambition... especially among the younger generation, you know the artists who are also entrepreneurs, the models who double as activists, the chefs turned storytellers, the stylists-slash-strategists. We’ve built a culture that idolizes the hustle and quietly sidelines rest. Even though I am no longer in the “younger generation”, I can relate. I used to be one of the people who’d say, “I’ll sleep when I die.” As a so-called hustler, I didn’t value sleep.

But here’s the truth, sleep isn’t a luxury. It’s the foundation that keeps everything else from crumbling.

When we sleep, the brain doesn’t just shut down, it cleans house. Memories consolidate, emotions reset, creativity refuels. You ever wake up after a good night’s rest and feel like your big problems are suddenly small blips in the grand scheme of things? That’s your brain’s overnight therapy session at work. Sleep regulates mood and helps manage stress, protecting us from burnout that too often creeps in when our schedules don’t allow pause.

Yet, the benefits of sleep are things we tend to take for granted like steady focus, quicker thinking, and emotional balance, things that often vanish so gradually with lost sleep that we don’t realize how drained we are until we crash. The foggy mornings, the short tempers, the lack of joy in things we love… these are the body's quiet alarms screaming, “SLOW DOWN!!!” Ask me how I know.

In a world that celebrates busyness, choosing sleep can almost feel rebellious. But maybe rebellion is exactly what we need. Giving yourself 7-9 hours isn’t laziness, it’s longevity. When we honor sleep, we’re not stepping away from our goals, we’re stepping toward them with sharper minds and lighter hearts. Great ideas, the bold creative breakthroughs, and the emotional stamina to keep pushing all thrive in a well-rested mind.

So, let’s start shifting the narrative. Let’s practice breathing exercises, implement nighttime routines, try sound baths, or put down our phones an hour or two earlier. I know… I struggle with that last one as well.

Trust me. Success built on exhaustion won’t last. But success built on hustle and quality sleep is a great combination toward sustainable success. You won’t have to thank me. Your hustle will thank YOU!
